Getting the pedals adjusted essentially means setting your throne the proper distance away from the bass drum and hi-hat stands. This task is pretty simple. You get the most power, speed, and endurance if your ankle joint lies directly beneath your knee.
If your knee sits too far beyond your ankle, you create an uncomfortable stress on your ankle joint when you play. If your knee is farther away from the drum or hi-hat stand than your ankle, your playing will lack power.
