Linear Grooves, Fills, and Solos

I use this technique when playing linear grooves, fills, and solos. What i do is literally place the number of beats i want to play into a fraction. ex. 1/1. I Think of playing a sixteenth note single stroke roll. My hands are alternating from one left to one right or 1/1. In a sixteenth note roll that would be 2 beats the 1 and the e. If you repeat the pattern you get the and uh. The 1 is a variable the numerator or the denominator could be your hand or foot. Now just pick and choose any number of beats and apply it. The pattern can be repeated and combined with other patterns created from this technique. Take 2/1. Two beats with the hands and 1 with the foot. Now play triplets with that pattern. Then give sixteenths a try. The variable number can be whatever you want them to be ex: 1h/1f, 1h/2f, 2h/1f, 3h/1f, 3h/2f, 4h/1f 4h/2f 5h/1 etc. Be creative this technique has taken my playing to another level!
