Drum Books Arranged alphabetically. -


Accents & Rebounds - George Lawrence Stone. Copyright 1961. This is an advanced book to be used after gaining some expertise using Stick Control. It has hand conditioning exercises for accents, rolls, finger bouncing, and the buzz roll. It includes the progressive approach to the control of the secondary beat of the roll. It is an excellent book for those wanting to attain a high proficiency in playing.

Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer Vol. 1 - Jim Chapin. Copyright 1948. This book is to be used to develop coordinated independence between the hands and feet while playing the standard jazz cymbal rhythm. The exercises also are designed to improve overall control, flexibility, and improvising in jazz playing.




Double Bass Drumming - Joe Franco. Copyright 1984. This book consists of three parts that each use what Joe calls “The Single Stroke System”. By using his system diligently, one can play in a powerful and consistant manner with a high degree of proficiency on the double bass drum. The three parts consist of:

1. Double Bass Beats - in sixteenth note patterns and eighth note triplet patterns.

2. Double Bass Fills - in sixteenth note patterns and eighth note triplet patterns. Also broken fill patterns, echoing the hands with the feet, and overlapping patterns.

3. Soloing Over the Double Bass Roll- with accented sixteenth notes. And sixteenth notes with mixed sticking, accented triplets, triplets with mixed sticking, and soloing over bass drum patterns.










Master Studies - Joe Morello. Copyright 1983. This book is for advanced drummers who want to continue the development of their control and technique. It can be used with what ever techniques that you have previously learned, and you can use these ideas in any kind of music. Some of the studies include accent studies, buzz roll studies, stroke combination studies, fill-in studies, ostinato studies, flam studies, and control studies which include endurance, velocity, progressive accents, dynamics, time, sticking, and other studies. It is suggested that some mastery of the book “Stick Control” has been acquired before using this book.

Master Studies II - Joe Morello. Copyright 2006. This is a continuation of “Master Studies”. An advanced-acvanced book. It has more exercises to develope your hands even further. It is suggested that some mastery of Master Studies be acquired before using this book.







Stick Control - George Lawrence Stone. Copyright 1935. This book is the cornerstone book for learning to develop and control the hands. “It is a highly specialized practice book, consisting of a progressive, highly concentrated collection of rhythms that can enable the serious drummer to gain control, speed, flexibility, touch, rhythm, lightness, delicacy, power, endurance, preciseness of execution, and muscular co-ordination. “It also can be used in conjunction with the feet by substituting foot strokes for hand strokes either for single or double bass.
