well i kind of dig Josh Freese, Jeremy Taggart, Matt Cameron, Carter Beauford, and Dennis Chambers, but my favorite right now is Tony Royster Jr. boy's got skills
hmmm Dennis Chambers... nice one... I always forget to add him to my list. There was a pretty good article about him in the second issue of Drumhead. Here is my updated list
1. Bonzo (my God)
2. Stewart Copeland (the visionary)
3. Steve Gadd (Precision drummer)
4. Dennis chambers (Mad skills)
5. Darren King (the new kid)

Christian Vander, drummer/composer
watch the grand finale of his Mekanik Destruktiw Komandoh, a full album length composition he wrote over 3 decades ago and which he still performs to date. It's in 7/8 (piano and vocals) but he plays over it (cuttime?). Little Drummer Boy liked it - so there is some hope...
he's in the zone - can you tell?

today my favorite drummer is....
- I guess everybody is getting my drift - actually my favorite drummers are the ones whose names I don't even know, people I run into (like at the Barcelona subway station during the early 90's) and who amaze me. ...intend to write a blog about that when I get the time - in the meantime I want you to know that anybody picking up them sticks and beginning to bang on things is doing the right thing and has a very good chance of becoming my favorite drummer. so, let's keep drumming and, yes, let's keep this forum going, let's celebrate all drummers - one at a time. ...who's next?

Thats the way it is unfortunately!
The people who have the most time to practice and play are the professional drummers, but they aren't in as desperate need of practising as us! Hard life

Well... - personally I did not have a "favorite drummer" for YEARS! And trust me I am familiar with a lot of
drummers
!!
Around 2 years ago one of the visitors of Drum Solo Artist has send me an email talking about this Australian drummer I did not know about. And so I made the research, and now thanks to
Andrew Hewitt
who has originally wrote that email I know about this virtuoso drummer!
I have listened to all the solo material I could get from this guy, and realized that he just became my favorite drummer!
His name is
Grant Collins
His profile can be
found here
And one of his tracks (video)
can be viewed here
:
Hopefully I will ad more of his work to the Drum Solos section later on.

Wow! Could so go on and on as to who would be in my Top 10 fav's......awesome that someone mentioned Grant Collins, he's like Australia's answer to Terry Bozzio. At the moment, having my head buried in melodic practice (tuned percussion and piano) I'd thought I'd list 10 drummer/
composers
1. Stewart Copeland
2. Gary Husband
3. Max Roach
4. Terry Bozzio
5. Steve Jansen
6. Virgil Donati
7. Neil Peart (as a lyrics writer)
8. Billy Cobham
9. Bill Bruford
10. Trilok Gurtu

There are so many drummers, living and dead, that I consider "great" and try as I may, I have never been able to come up with only ONE favorite drummer. On my recent blog I listed some favorites for certain styles. Here they are:
Jazz /Fusion John Guerin
Hired Gun - Keith Carlock
Big Band Butch Miles/Gregg Field
Live Show Ron Tut
Studio Jeff Poccaro/Jim Keltner
Heavy Rocker John Bonham
Funk David Garabaldi
Country Larrie Londin
Christian Music Will Denton
Progressive Rock - Mike Portnoy
Concert Rock Neal Peart
Pop Rock - JR Robinson
Groove Miester - Bernard Purdie
Latin Percussion - Lalo Davila
There are many more that I admire and I continue to listen to as many as possible.

I truly enjoyed viewing the Grant Collins video that PASHA cited.
As mentioned before, there are so many great drummers that makes it impossible for many of us to say "___" is my absolute favorite.
One of the most inspiring drummers I have ever met is Chester Thompson, who is also on the faculty of my Alma Mater, Belmont University, here in Nashville.
His impressive career includes work with Frank Zappa, George Duke, Weather Report, Dave Koz, Genesis, Phil Collins, John Fogerty, Tower of Power, Neil Diamond, Michael McDonald, Kirk Whalum, and Donna Summer....on and on. He's achieved a level of respect in the music world that tmost of us can only dream of ever getting close to.
To me, he respesents an example of a consumate professional drummer who can "do it all" and yet still aspires to explore new ideas!
He is a kind and honest gentleman, who spends a lot of time working with young people in many ways, including, of course, music.
His website is:

Hi,
There are a lot of really exceptional drummers. My personal favorite is Buddy. But, there are many others that I like and that have influenced me. It wouldn't be fair not to mention them. Also, I would have to say that it not just their technique alone that I admire, but their ability to play musically with the other muscians in such a way that the music takes on a life of it's own and gives it that feeling that other drummers can't give it.
So, continuing with my favorites, some of the older drummers I like are Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Joe Morello, Shelly Manne, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Arthur Taylor, Philly Joe Jones, Sid Catlet, Loui Bellson, Gene Krupa, Kenny Clarke, Connie Kay, Ed Thigpen, Charles Persip, Danny Richmond, and many others.
From the 60s I like Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell, Mel Schacher, John Bohnam, Buddy Miles, Clyde Stubblefield, Gary Chester, Hal Blaine, and many others.
I'll leave the metal and new fusion players for another time.
