  You need to have a double bass though, 2 eyes would look better than one!

    I agree.  I truly miss the look, sound, and feel of two kick drums.  


But seriously, with the development of workable double beater bass drum pedals, I dispensed with two bass drums.......as my "normal" set-up back in 1984.     So with only "one eye" showing nowadays, I speculate that my modern day kit is truly....... a cyclops.

The history of this instrument goes way back rdrummer322 as you may know. The word cajon means "box" in Spanish. The slaves in Puru were not permitted to have instruments so they beat rhythms on fruit crates. This is where the instrument originated. They have a fantastic sound and great for general percussion!

I have some old Yamaha's that I still use sometimes.  They are the old 9000 Series (predecessor of the Recording Custom Kits) with 14" x 22" bass drums.  The toms I pick from are: 16" x 16", 12" x 15", 10" x 14", 9" x 13", 8" x 12", 6 1/2" x 10".

This photo was taken in the rehearsal room.  This is the new Yamaha Absolute Birch kit that I am using for large venue shows, and it is one of the kits described in the NEW DSA Drum Setup feature.  As I discussed in another recent post, I have had to modify my longstanding "3 rack toms and a floor tom" set-up up because of a shoulder injury.

This new kit has 2 rack toms on a stand and 2 floor toms.  This allows me to place my ride cymbal in a lower postion that is more comfortable with the restructions of my injury.

I've been using this new configuration for three months and it is working out very well.

Hey there Tomm,

Snare drum? I have been using a Yamaha David Garibadli snare drum (shown a few posts above) for most things with this kit, but I do sometimes use a Yamaha 6" x`14" birch shell snare for a deep and woody sound.

Heads?  For many years I have used Aquarian heads, which exemplify in my experience, the best quality and design available. On the bass drum batter side I have a clear Super Kick I. On the front I have a video white gloss Full Force with custom design work from Drum Art.

On the toms, I have clear Super 2's with Studio X Ring on the batter side and Classic Clears on the bottom.

The David Garibaldi Model snare drum has a coated Focus X on the batter and the Classic Clear Snare Bottom on the bottom.  The Absolute Birch has a coated Response 2 on the batter and a Classic Clear Snare Bottom on the bottom.

This kit is tuned for performing live and producing contemporary music drum tones.

Ken, your flare for detail is a real benefit to us, as well as a good hobby for you...lol.  I'd be willing to bet that you didn't even have to go look at your drums to come up with all that info...Tomm

I hadn't thought about that.....however, you are right. I guess I'm with the gear so much, I know the particulars with "total recall".

It's CMA Music Fest time in Nashville this week.  There were several "pre-festival" events this past week-end.  Here is a shot of my new Yamaha Absolute Birch kit on stage at a outdoor pavalion.  I took the picture from the players perspective so you can see the set-up I'm using nowadays. I finally got my ride cymbal into a comfortable position that works well with my right shoulder accomadations (after 3 surgeries this past year). 

One piece of essential equipment (in the 90 degree heat) that you can't see is my fan!

Okay....got an email asking about the microphones in the picture above and a couple of other things.  I'll share it with any others who may be interested.

These are my microphones, because we hired a sound tech, but we used our own gear.
Bass Drum -   Heil PR40 with an Earthworks Kick Pad plug in.
16" Tom -      Heil PR30
14" Tom -      Heil PR30
12" Tom-       Heil Mini-Pro
8" & 10" Tom- Heil Mini-Pro
Snare Drum-   Heil PR22

Typically, when using my own microphones, I use some very inexpensive Berringer C-2 condenser mics for the hi hats and overheads at live performances. Compared to a Shure SM81 you save about $300 per microphone!....so they are worth checking out 

However, at this particular venue I didn't use any cymbal overheads for our performance. With the cymbal sounds bouncing inside that pavillion's ceiling and walls (and with all of the other open mics), we just didn't need them.

Also had a question about the gadget you can see on the left side of the photo.  That device attached to my hi hat stand is simply my click. 

And finally....yep.....that's the David Garibaldi snare drum I used for that performance. It's been my favorite lately.  Ghost notes just come off so clear with it and the sound guys don't usually have to gate it (personally...I hate it when they gate my snare drum).
