The best sounding drums
«

Think about this question and then share your opinion with us.
What
recorded tune
has a drum sound that, in your opinion, represents the best sounding drums to you?
Note that I am not speaking of the "best song" or the "best drum parts"....but rather the
actual sound
of the drums themselves.
For me, I submit
"Jane" by Jefferson Starship
. Even after all of the years that have passed since the song was recorded……....I keep going back to that recording where each drum just leaps out in the mix with a great tone and presence.
LET'S SEE WHAT DSA READERS POST AS T H E I R O W N CONCEPT OF THE BEST SOUNDING DRUMS.

Hi,
For me, the best sounding drums are in the song "Far More Drums" by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Joe morello is the drummer (for all of you new drummers). Besides the drums themselves having a beautiful sound, Joe plays them in 5/4 time performing what I believe is one of the most amazing drums solos ever played.

Hey Don, that's a great one that demonstates the tradional jazz tunings and who better to demonstrate those sounds but Joe Morello?

I believe my "great sounding drums" second place favorite is "Green Earings" by Steely Dan

Hi,
I would choose Elvin Jones on "Chasing the Train" live at the Village Vangaurd as the second best sounding drums. (of course in any best, I always automatically leave out Buddy since it isn't fair to the other drummers in my opinion.
I had this song here to listen to on Youtube, but it was taken down.

Hi!
There are a couple that would be in the top few for me that I can think of:
Andy Newmark's drums on Roxy Music's
The High Road
live album, Al Foster's drums on Miles Davis'
The Man With The Horn
, Mike Portnoy's drums on
A Change Of Seasons
(Dream Theatre), Bill Bruford's drums on
One Of A Kind
, and I do like the sound they got for Lars' drums on the Metallica
Black
album.

Great example of a very natural and unprocessed drum sound.

Hi,
I had previously posted Elvin Jones "Chasin" the Trane", but it was taken down at Youtube. Now I have picked "Far More Drums" featuring Joe Morello. The drums have a great sound. Plus, there is the bonus of one of the most amazing drums solos ever put down.
