Title: Cymbal Rankings
Post by: Johnathan on December 08, 2008, 03:32:23 PM
What I would like to know is a rack and stack ranking of the various cymbals out there.  How does a Zildjian Z compare to an A and then how those cymbals line up with a competitor such as Saban, Paste etc.

I have no knowledge on this but I bet others do and if you post it, the info will assist a great deal of us who may not understand what we are looking at and getting ready to buy.

A matix of some sort will do  it :)  Example

Zildjian A     =  Paste ....   = Saban...
Zildjian Z     and so on but put the top of the line of each at the top and work your way down.

Johnathan, I believe you will find that Zildjian and Sabian, which are both made by the Zildjian Family members.....and of the same alloy; are, indeed, comparable in many regards.

However, other major cymbal brands differ in manufacturing methods, alloy (s), and specifications.

A matrix may illustrate one player's opinion on how certain brands compare......but it will be a different matrix for the next person's opinion.  The differences heard will vary greatly from person to person.  For some people a crash is a crash.  For people like me, there are hundreds of crash sounds.  I couldn't create you a usablel matrix.....I wouldn't even begin to try.  I COULD recommend cymbals for you to try out for use in certain musical genres.  However, I probably am more picky than some other players might be.

The best way to learn initially is to visit the manufacturer's website and look at the various models and series they offer.   Then take YOUR sticks to the drum shop and see what YOUR ears prefer to hear.

Cymbal sounds are very personal choices,  See my blog Selecting Cymbals 101 for more discussion

Ah, thanks Ken, that helps me understand and the blog will give me more insight.  I have a friend selling a Paste pst 5 Rock Ride that sounds awesome and few others that I do like the sound on.  I do not like my Zildjian ZBT4 ride it does not do it for me.  It is good for some types of sound as you mention but I need something more then what this one cymbal offers.

Many thanks on this one :)

The cymbals you cite are not premium grade cymbals, however, if you like them why not buy them if the prices are good.   Usually you can find good quality used cymbals at drum shops at about 35% - 40% of list price.

Also, Fork's in Nashville, sells all new cymbals everyday at 50% of list.  Think about that too.

Here is a breakdown pricewise of the most common cymbals. I used 16 " as a guide to have something similar to compare.... I got these prices from Musician's friend by the way.

Zildjian Planet Z              34.99
Pulse B857 14"              39.95
Meinl HCS              44.95
Paiste PST 3              47

Zildjian ZBT              69.95
Paiste PST 5              71
Paiste PST 5 Rock Crash    89
Sabian B8 Pro              89
Zildjian ZXT              94.95
Meinl Classics              99.99

Zildjian A              179.95

Zildjian Armand            199.95
Meinl Byzance Dark            209.99
Sabian Vault            215
Zildjian K Custom Dark Th 229.95

Paiste Traditional             273
Sabian Legacy 17"             279
Zildjian K Constantinople   289.95

I know that price has very little to do with personal preference, but it helped me to understand where cymbals were on the major brand pecking order, if you will. For example it helpts to know that a Sabian AAX, Zildjian A Custom and Zildjian Armand are all within $5 of Musician's Friend's price. This lets you know the kind of deal you are getting when a store cuts you a deal.
