Ive found the same problem. The best thing is to be open minded. Dont just look for bands who dont have drummers. Get to know members of bands and let them know your a drummer with experience. Then if their stuck without a drummer for some reason they can turn to you. Having connections is very important in music related stuff.
heres where "its who you know not what you know" comes in in bit.
look for a local, small (cheap) recording/rehersing studio. Let them know your avalible because if a band practices there and have no drummer, they are likely to tell the staff at that studio who then could pass on info about you.
Also try putting an advert in a guitar mag (not a drum mag). Some of them charge nothing to put an advert in. in the ad, made sure you put how long you've been playing, your age, your phone number and where you live. Its also good to mention that you have your own kit and maybe put some of the bands you like aswell.
You can advertise anywhere really. just think of the places that guitarists are going to look most.
good luck

maybe it won't be a bad idea to post your add "looking for..." at craigslist.org or somewhere else. There are tones and loads of web-sites that provide profiles of local musicians. You can find someone there or post your resume. But!!! Granny is absolutelly right!! Make some contacts- go to shows and meet new people!

Hey , I had the same problem for like a year .. I had like five bands , and the whole time I was doing it with just my friends .. Then in one of my classes at school I got to talking with one guy , he liked all the same music as me , at this time I was in one of my other bands (going no where) anyways one day I asked him to try and sing for our band .. He came over , and he could sing , he could also play harmonica better then anyone I know , and beat box .. two weeks later I had started a band with some guys that he introduced me too .. and we`ve been together for 7 months .. so what I`m saying is keep an open mind .. anyone can be out there , youve just gotta start talking to more people , outside your friends group .. you know what I mean ?
