 Hi,

I believe we have discussed this in the past, but it doesn't hurt to go over it again, and again, and again,................What makes a good drummer a good drummer?

Is it how many complicated tricky beats you can play?

Is it playing faster than anyone else?

Is it twirling your sticks so much people think you escaped from a Chinese circus?

Is it having so many drums that you can't even play them?

Is it playing drums solos made up of memorized drum licks that are stitched together so the result is something that sounds like an expensive drum machine?

        What do you think?

I would suggest playing what best fits the music comes to mind first.  In all music there are places where you play the notes and places where you have the rests.  Both are important in making a musical statement.

To that I would add that the most amazing drummers I have heard, find subtle ways to add colors, or drama, or intensity, or textures, or moods to the music.  They steer in the dynamic changes at the exact right moment to keep the tune flowing and presenting the element in the tune that makes it distinctive.

You forgot to add:  lots of tattoos and pulling stupid faces at any camera in range, surely there also drummer cliche's.

i think some of the things that make a great drummer great are.

always keep in mind that your number 1 job is to keep time for the band.

dont overplay , not every song is a drum solo, play for the song ,not for your ego

the best players know when not to play

these are just my opinion
