Being a diverse musician comes from listening to everything

This is just a short note from me to you, whoever you may happen to be. I am by no means the smartest bulb, but here is on thing that I have learned along the may and would hope that somebody, somewhere will get something out of it. I have been playing the drums since the 5th grade, and now am 43. The one thing that I found along the way that was truly helpful, was not to get myself stuck in one style of music. For me, listening to all different kinds of music has allowed me to be much more rounded as a musician. It has also caused me to push myself to learn new styles and find a bunch of great bands in the process. So, if you really want to always have new things to bring to the table, then broaden your horizons.

Totally agree. You can always tell when playing with other musicians which ones have a broad, open musical "vocabulary" and which are narrowly focussed on a particular genre or even a particular few bands.
