Mathieu Soucy


Born on september 7 of year 1977 (Québec, Canada), Mathieu Soucy (Matt S) is a composer, a performer, a multi-instrumentist musician (with drum as first instrument followed by guitar, bass and piano). He also work as concert producer (since 1995) and multimedia specialist (Mage Design). He his a self teached artist with a lifetime devotion and passion for the music and arts in general.
Mathieu Soucy started his musical career in 1993 as drummer composer and performer playing with many local alternative bands such as Garisson's Funfrolik and the Wild Dreamers, two bands he created with others musicians friends.

Between 1995 and 1997, Mathieu Soucy gained some experience as a concert producer, sound technician and event promoter. He produced many small and mid-sized events featuring local bands and popular acts such as Respectables, Eonz, Map, Waggle, Beefriendz, Thicker, Bleux, Rip, Garrisson's Funfrolik and Flangers.

In 1996, while working as marketing director for G.J.A productions inc., Matt his requested by the Quebec punk band No Name to play drums on the CD compilation Focus - Rock produced by 7#9 productions. It was a great experience but due to some schedule conflicts with his others projects, he his forced to quit the band after 2 months.
Mathieu Soucy created in 1996 (with Julien Martre) the alternative band Flangers, a band with who he recorded (as drummer co-producer and co-composer) the CD album Unwind 308 (indie, 1997) and the single Alone (indie, 1996). The songs Alone, Adapt to me and Bloodeïn received airplay from many local radio stations such as CHOI FM, CKRL FM, CKIA FM and CHYZ FM. Flangers also had some media coverage from local magasines and newspapers such as Journal de Québec and Le Voir.

Flangers released their first independent CD album ''Unwind 308'' on december 5 of 1997 at the Pub O'Zone (Limoilou). The bar was packed of people who enjoyed a 2 hours performance served by the band that was also broadcasted in real time on CHOI FM 98.1 (Québec city rock radio). The band also made (on december 4 of 1997) a pre-release of the ''Unwind 308'' album matched with an acoustic performance for the local Sam the Record Man music store.

Mathieu Soucy been featured, thru the years, as first act for many canadian bands and artists such as : Tribes of March, The Respectables, Eonz, Cherry Poppers, Glueleg, Beefriendz, Me and My bones and Anthony Kavanah. He also shared the stage with many great performers such as Jim Zeller, Carl Tremblay and Steve Rowe.

During the summer of 1998 he give life (with Geneviève Grenier) to Mage Design, a web / design and multimedia business. Through his company he has created and designed many websites, ads and graphics for artistic clients such as Garolou, Jim Zeller, Disques Francor, Gaston Gagnon, Studio CDgraff and the Festival the la Relève to only name a few ones. (Mathieu Soucy is still operating Mage Design)

Mathieu Soucy is now (since 1999) creating music in his personal home studio, music that is self-produced, self-engineered and self-promoted by himself. He his also performing every instruments presents in his recordings (electronic and acoustic drums, electronic and acoustic guitars, bass, keyboards, programming). Matt S (artist name of Mathieu Soucy) music can be described as a blend between Electro-acoustic, Electronica, New-Age and progrssive music with influences taken from many cultures.

Mathieu Soucy performed in concert (since 1993), as drummer, more then 125 times in bars and concerts rooms such as : Bar le d'Auteuil, Bar le Kashmir, Bar Chez Dagobert, Bar l'Arlequin, Le Medley, Le Bistro à JoJo, Le Centre Durocher, Le Pub O'Zone, L'Auditorium Luc Plamondon, Bar le Zig-Zag, Bar le Mundial, Le Café Chaos and the Laval university's P.E.P.S. He also been featured on many festival around the Quebec province such as the Carnaval de Québec, Urgence Noël, Woodstock de St-Rédempteur, Woodstock de l'ESD, L'Orage Rock, Quebec Rock sur scène, Le festival de la relève Hard-Rock and Les Fêtes champêtres de Cap-Rouge.

He also performed as drummer for many blues bands and artists (around Montreal city) such as : Gaston Gagnon, Headfirst (playing with Marc Deschênes, Paul Grondin, Bob Smith, Réginald Guay and Gaston Gagnon), Mike Lasalle band, Gaztation (Actual music project with Gaston Gagnon) and the Multimedia Blues Band (Blues project created by J.F William formed of multimedia professionnals).
