Billy Hart

Billy Hart is one of the true masters of jazz drumming. He is one of the few drummers to accomplish the time aspects of drumming while also making the the drums an element of the melodic line. Billy is one of the most established, lyrical and creative drummers in jazz, and has been a mainstay in jazz for decades as one of the most in-demand sidemen on the scene. He has also led successful dates as leader. He is also an extremely good teacher, with a vast knowlege of the history of drumming and the great drum innovators, past and present. He is truly a living legend in jazz. Billy Hart was born November 29, 1940, in Washington DC. He grew up there and landed his first professional gig at age 20 with Shirley Horn. This gig allowed Billy to establish himself as a reputable drummer, and he hasn't looked back since.
Billy has worked with a countless number of jazz greats including McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Smith, Stan Getz, Charlie Rouse, Cecil Taylor, Pharoah Sanders, Wes Montgomery, and Miles Davis.

Billy strives to be a complete musician. Rather than always trying to advance his own career, he has been involved in group projects and has worked as a sideman with great success. As examples, he was a member of the Mingus Dynasty, he co-founded percussion ensemble Coloquim III, and he played with The Great Friends and Quest.
Hart has recorded 8 successful albums and appears on literally hundreds of recordings as a sideman. The fact that so many great musicians want Hart as their drummer is testament to his great playing. Hart is still highly energetic and in demand as a musician and teacher to this day.
