Together they join Allison in representing eight beautiful renditions of her compositions. 5am stroll is an energetic, swingin', instrumental jazz album with a tinge of contemporary grooves and singable melodies.
Allison is also involved in a new project called Agrazing Maze . Agrazing Maze is comprised of Ingrid Jensen on trumpet, Enrique Haneine on piano, Carlo DeRosa on bass, and Allison on drums and toys. Together these four exciting, emerging musicians create, compose, and improvise as a whole, creating unique compositions and a distinct band sound. They are always pushing the creative envelope... always on the fringe. Their new album, At the End of the Day , will be released on Foxhaven Records in March of 2005.
While working on the these projects, Allison still allows time to be an active member in Marty Ehrlich's "New Trio," The Natalie Merchant Band, John McNeil's quintet, and Kitty Margolis's backing trio. She also loves to teach and give masterclasses.
Allison Miller was born in good ole' Texarkana , Texas . She was uprooted from a wholesome southern upbringing when her father relocated the Miller family to a quaint mini-farm on the hills of Maryland . When Allison was not milking the goats, she began to fiddle with singing and the piano. She tolerated the piano and singing lessons only because she knew her mother would eventually give up and allow Allison to do what she had wanted to do since the womb...DRUM DRUM DRUM!
Allison began playing the drums at age 10 and never turned back. She quickly began studying with the top teacher in the DC area, Walter Salb. In 1991 she was featured in Downbeat magazine's "Up and Coming" feature. Soon she was playing in clubs in Washington , DC and eventually continued her passion for music by receiving a Bachelor of Music Performance at West Virginia University . After graduating summa cum laude in 1996, she moved to NYC to begin her career as a freelance drummer and continue her studies with the great Michael Carvin. Since then she has stormed onto the music scene with all of her heart.
Allison has performed and recorded with Natalie Merchant, Pino Daniele, Kenny Barron, Norah Jones, Ray Drummond, Sheila Jordan, Marty Ehrlich, George Garzone, Kitty Margolis, Michael Fienstein, Toshi Reagon, Mike Stern, Rachel Z, Kevin Mahogany, Ingrid Jensen, Paul Bollenback, Barbara Dennerlein, John McNeil, Virginia Mayhew, Bruce Barth, Mark Soskin, Harvie S, and the band "Betty". Allison has also had the wonderful opportunity to be chosen by the US State Dept. to tour East Africa , Eurasia and Central Southeast Asia as a Jazz Ambassador.
Allison gives lessons and masterclasses at universities (NYU, Amherst, U. of Alaska , Elon Univ. , U. of Southern Florida , West Virginia Univ. , Berkeley Jazz School , U. of the Pacific, Kutztown U. ) and high schools throughout the United States . She recently had one of her lessons published in DRUM magazine and was featured in Downbeat, Jazz Times, Modern Drummer and Female Musician magazine.
